March Member Spotlight- Scot Perkins
This month we would like to recognize Scot Perkins! Mr. Scot, as some like to respectfully call him, is Retired Navy, husband, father and now a proud grandfather of two! In such a short period of time, Scot has recently set a back squat PR that he's worked very hard for and reached multiple goals! He is one that everyone knows and is happy to share a WOD with!
I want to first say thanks to Gerry and Art for even thinking about me when deciding who should receive this honor. I can’t believe that after only 6 short months they believe that I am deserving of being named Spotlight Athlete of the Month or even being in the consideration. Well I told them I would write a little something so here goes.
I wish I could say that athletics or just working out was always part of my life, but sadly like a lot of other people in this world it was not. I was never that great at doing PT while in the Navy and when first retiring from the US Navy back in 2009 it was always hard to find exactly what I needed in way of exercise. Yes even my doctors (yes plural) have all said exercise, lose some weight you be so much better. Emily and I knew we needed to do something, walk, run or something. We were not getting any younger and my health was at best getting worse. Every trip to the doctor I seemed to come out with another pill to take.
So following orders like a Sailor I am, I had memberships at Gold Gym then Planet Fitness and even went to the MWR gyms on the Navy bases. But there always seem to be an excuse not to go. It might have been the fact that I had to fight for a machine or no one to actually guide me on what to do or the fact that I had very little motivation. Well to be honest I think it was all three.
Now 6 years later, my wonderful baby daughter Carol started this new thing “CrossFit” and did it produce some results in her!
She looked amazing and was so much stronger. So in September of last year she finally brought me to the box for the first time. I met Gerry and I will tell you that meeting was the most painful experience I had ever had, even the greatest day of my life did not compare to that.
But after some research and getting my doctors blessing and of course having some the best motivation in the world (our Grandson Justice, and new Granddaughter Ava) I started the journey that I can say after 6 months is one of the best I have ever been on!
You may someday be asked what is your motivation to keep going and work through the pain, find the time in your busy schedule to get in a WOD? Well for me, these two are it. I truly want to see them grow up, I want to see them graduate and move on to bigger and better things. I honestly believe that now I am going to be able to do just that.
For the first time in, well I really can’t remember when, I actually have some goals. I know that I can get there with some hard work, a little motivation from my new family and keeping my motivation close to my heart. I do want to say thank you to everyone at DBCF. You take everyone who comes through those doors and treat us as family. It doesn’t matter if we are a world class athlete or a 53 year old over weight couch potato. When it comes down to it we are all looking for the same thing, a way to get and stay fit, live a little longer and have a little fun on the way. All while doing it with great people, no friends, nope FAMILY who actually care about you and what you do.
