April Member Spotlight

This month's spotlight is a woman who defines intelligence, strength and beauty.  She is a working college student by day and a fierce CrossFitter by evening. She started her journey into CrossFit only over a year ago and since then we have seen her explode in amazing PRs. She can destroy a WOD before the sun even rises. One can often see her quietly in the corner before class, and during open gym working hard on her weightlifting and gymnastics. She is a member who is very supportive of her fellow athletes and can make anyone smile and laugh with her sense of humor. Without further ado, I introduce to you the Awesome APRIL BOSSONS!

It's surprising to me that I’ve been chosen for the member spotlight. There are so many amazing athletes at Drop Box and it truly is an honor to have been selected. Although I may have a little bit of an advantage considering my name is the same as this month =]

So I’ll share my journey on how I became part of the CrossFit community.

My fitness background: I’ve always been pretty strong “for a girl”. Sports in high school kept me in shape, drinking for years after graduating did not. I frequented the gym enough to keep some muscle on me. Eventually, I started running to train for the Tough Mudder. I lost weight, putting me at the lightest I’d been since middle school, and I couldn’t stand it. I started lifting again, kind of. Results were slow, probably because I wasn’t going that often.

I didn’t know much about CrossFit. I knew it was a whole bunch of running around and doing crazy stuff. Thinking this was too much cardio for my liking, I was unsure. But I knew that what I was doing on my own wasn’t working. I remember asking Coach G at the end of the intro class if I would be able to gain muscle from doing CrossFit. As I was asking this, I looked around and saw all of these diesel people, and immediately realized that was a stupid question. So I decided I’d give it a try. It still took me a while to accept CrossFit. Can you blame me? It’s hard. And I’m lazy. I die with every workout.

So why do I CrossFIt? The bottom line: it makes me better. Mentally and physically, I’m stronger. And since I’m stronger, life is easier. When I’m drained at work, or dealing with something I don’t want to deal with, all I have to do is say to myself, “At least it’s not a WOD!” And bringing in the groceries. It’s so easy now. I mean, a lot of groceries. Really, it’s the simple things. Oh and how can I forget, CrossFit makes me diesel. And I love it. And another thing: CrossFit has definitely humbled me. I thought I was pretty strong before, but I quickly learned that I wasn’t as strong as I thought, and there are plenty of people way stronger than me, and that’s ok. So, I CrossFit.

DBCF: April likes to bust a bicep pose for the camera only when she's feeling diesel. With her teammates, The RBFs took 1st place in their division at Team Grit last weekend.

It would be amiss of me not to mention the community. We’ve all heard it before. But I must emphasize that the friendships I’ve grown at Drop Box are priceless. The athletes have incredible energy, and truly want you to succeed. They inspire me to be better. I’m excited for what my CrossFit/fitness future in general has in store! Some of my short term goals include a 135# snatch, a 175# clean and jerk, and more muscle ups!  Long term, hopefully by the end of the year, a 155# snatch and 200# clean and jerk would be nice. I also plan on doing some more running, and working on my speed =]

Current PRs:

165# C&J
125# Snatch
215# Back Squat
225# DL
I think those are the big ones?
